    This tow line is MUCH shorter than what we used when moving the Rowan California around the southern North Sea in the early 1980s. We used never less than half-mile long tow lines, and sometimes longer if there were a swell or significant wind, usually using two tugs and sometimes three. I remember seeing the tugs' running lights moving from side to side during night tows because the rig was yawing so much. As the radio operator I was sometimes busy calling vessels nearby to alert them to not pass between the rig and the tugs. Fun times!

    1 major mistake. Rope needs to be very straight going into the socket for a length equal to 20 x diameter of rope. When curving into socket like was done in video, there will be an imbalance of loading on the individual wires when the assembly is straightened and under tension. What will happen is half of the wires will be under tension and half will be under compression. Under high tension loading, the assembly will almost certainly fail before reaching the catalog breaking strength of the rope. Other mistake is the wires were broomed excessively. When pulled into the socket, this will cause wires to “pile up” against wall of socket. Wires should be more evenly distributed in the bowl of the socket. Lastly, overtopping the top tips of the ends of the wires with the resin mixture may look good after pouring, but under loading and the resin cone seats down into the bowl of the socket, the overtopped portion will likely crack and may even chip off. Though this may be alarming, it actually does not affect strength or integrity. But better to just not overtop. Leave the tips exposed.

      In 20 years I've never left the tips exposed and have never had an issue. They should be closing the broom with a hammer though.

    • @barnsdalebob
      @barnsdalebob 22 дня назад

      @@brianjohnston4207we would have been sacked for such a bodge job, the brush wasn't cleaned correctly, it was too big when drawn into the socket and we would have had it much higher in order to correct the alignment with the rope to socket also the wirelock would have been paddle mixed all in one larger container.

    • @brianjohnston4207
      @brianjohnston4207 22 дня назад

      @barnsdalebob agreed! I would have closed that broom up with a hammer, then submerged the whole thing in citrasolve with some air bubbling in it. You can mix wirelock in multiple containers but they have to be done at the exact same time. You are correct typically you would combine all 3 wirelock kits into 1 container. If they don't all cure at the same time you can get cracking and voids in the resin and failure.

    • @michaelhall9818
      @michaelhall9818 22 дня назад

      @@brianjohnston4207 100% agree Brian. It is recommended tips be left exposed. Pouring over the top will lead to that section likely developing cracks on that top section only. It shouldn't lead to cracking throughout the section that has wires. It's like rebar in concrete. But better to leave tips exposed.

    • @brianjohnston4207
      @brianjohnston4207 22 дня назад

      @@michaelhall9818 like I said, been doing it for 21 years, and never leave the wires exposed and never had an issue. Exposed tips is just another gateway for rust and it's ugly. If you know what are doing its a non issue, I've seen lots of cracked and chucked out resin sockets upon inspection it's usually from whoever poured the sockets not filling the grooves on the inside before pouring and when the socket seats the cone is not only damaged by breaking free from the grooves but seats suddenly . Unlike zinc which is soft and will mash into the bottom of the cone and not crack, resin is solid, but secceptible to cracking when seated in this manner. I have the luxury of presenting my pours before I ship them to a customer and when I perform break testing on high performance rope we always use resin and present the cones to proof load before performing the tests.

    What the hell is it with all those so-called music playing!!! nobody narrates anything anymore videos???? And, They play shit for brains noise they call music!!!!! and on top of that the music sucks!!!!! this makes number 16 video that the owner does not talk and explain anything what the person is looking at. They play goof-for brains noise they call music!!!!! and then they wonder why hardly anybody watches videos compared to the videos that actually do have the owner talking on the video and explaining what the person is looking at!!!). here’s some advice for you, you idiot!!! Go watch a few videos where the owner of the video talks or he has people in the video talking like the deck-hands / engineers / Captains / Mates explain things. Watch a few of their videos and you will see why people like those videos much more and why their videos are watched 100 times more than your type.
